When we go on vacation we often try to stay at gay owned or gay friendly B&Bs. Often in major centres there are many to choose from and then we look at the individual B&Bs web sites and our priorities include location, comfort, amenities, ambiance and price. Sometimes the websites are basic or others do not suggest problems with bathrooms for larger persons. Occasionally we have been disappointed though there are B&Bs who excel with their hospitality.
The following list of Bed and Breakfast, some with descriptions, most we have stayed with though there are B&Bs that have been recommended by other guests. If you have a favourite bed and breakfast that we should be aware of then email us at westways@shaw.ca and we will check them out and add them to the list.
Canada:
Alberta: Calgary and Edmonton B&Bs are listed in previous sections.
Hinton
Old Entrance Bed 'n Breakfast Cabins.
Located about a 45-minute drive heading east from Jasper town but close to the town of Hinton for restaurants and stores. Old Entrance is on acreage on the North Bank of the Athabasca River. Here you can choose either a room in the main house, comfortable cabins or teepees. Camping is also allowed. Breakfast is served in the main house and you can cook meals over the fire pits. Your knowledgeable hosts provide guided horse rides. We really enjoyed ourselves especially sitting around the open fire pit at night gazing at the bright stars. Old Entrance is open year round.
Ferintosh
This small village is located just off highway 21, south and east of Edmonton, Camrose is the nearest main town. Ferintosh is beside the Little Beaver Lake famous for its wild bird life.
Ferintosh Manor Bed & Breakfast
This 1930 heritage home has comfortable bedrooms with period furnishing and plenty of dried flowers arrangement, breakfasts not bad. Some of the bedrooms have lake views and the two guys are great hosts and knowledgably about the local area. The home has frequent sightings of ghosts but we did not see any yet.
Banff
These two gay friendly Banff B&Bs have not been check out by us but they do advertise on gay websites. If you do stay drop us a line to tell us of your experiences.
Riverside Bed and Breakfast

Cypress Hills
These hills are located south and west Saskatchewan and extend into southern Alberta.
Ravenscraig
Spring Valley Ranch
Here in Cypress Hills you are transported away from the city to rural life of a Ranch. This historic house was moved from Alberta to its present location because the Albertans in the town were not approving of B&B accommodation. The home has 4 bedrooms with shared bathrooms and an attic TV room. There are furnished cabins with TV. Evening meals are provided as well as hearty breakfasts. We come here just to unwind, relax and enjoy the fine country air and well look after by your host Jim.
Manitoba:
Winnipeg
Winged Ox Guest House
Tony has been operating this establishment for several years.
We are fortunate that we are able to take time off and have vacations to recharge our batteries; wherever possible we like to stay at gay and gay friendly B&Bs. The following comments are based on our personal views and preferences, being for amenities i.e. unsuited bathrooms (private), television and queen or king beds. We hope the following reviews are of help and please email us with your experiences so as to help to update and expand this review.
Ontario:
Toronto
Bearfoot Inn
30A Dundonald Street, Toronto, Ontario, Canada, M4Y 1K2 Tel. (416) 922 1658
The Bearfoot Inn is a modern town house in an older district close to the gay Toronto village. Located on Dundonald Street between Yonge Street and Church Street with Wellesley subway station being the closest to the inn. The Bearfoot Inn is ideally located to access the various gay bars, clubs and stores in Toronto gay village, parking for the Inn is restricted.
Amenities: Very good, rooms come with private bathroom with usual soaps etc, robes but no hairdryer. TV, DVD & VCR and small fridge in the room. Wireless Internet.
Hospitality: Good, the self serve continental breakfast was not that conducive to interaction with the other guests and the hosts were busy elsewhere though Glen and Jerry are the Bearfoot Inn friendly bear hosts who have run the inn for several years developing repeat clientele.
Overall Comfort: Very good especially if you like very firm beds, personally I did not like the open concept where your bathroom bodily noises were easily heard in the bedroom. Bring eyeshades if you do not want to be awakened by the morning daylight.
Value for Money: Very good as the location is ideal.
Pimblett’s Bed and Breakfast
242 Gerard Street East, Toronto, Ontario, Canada, Tel. (416) 921 6898
Pimblett’s B&B is straight friendly and is located in the cosmopolitan area of Cabbage Town still within walking distance of Toronto’s gay bars and clubs. Cabbage Town historical Victorian houses are gradually being gentrified encouraging some of the conspicuous locals to move on and ply their trades elsewhere. If you like open plan, clear lines and spaciousness then Pimblett’s B&B is not for as this Toronto bed and breakfast excels in clutter with a little dust, reflecting the eccentricity of its owner Geoffrey. Off street parking available at back of the house.
Amenities: Good, rooms have private bathrooms with mixed match linen. Our room had a small colour TV with cable and wireless Internet.
Hospitality: Very Good as Geoffrey is an enjoyable character and is of assistance for guests to plan their day. The same every day cooked breakfast is good and is great to interact with the other guests at the table.
Overall Comfort: Good especially if you enjoy extremely firm bed, a little sparse in storage, the decks are great in the summer. Drapes do block most of the daylight.
Value for Money: Very good as being about half the cost of the Bearfoot as long you do not mind the clutter and some of the unfinished details to remodeling projects.
Ottawa
Ottawa Centre Bed and Breakfast
62 Stewart Street, Ottawa, Ontario, Canada, K1N 6J1 Tel. (613) 237-9494
The Ottawa Centre bed and breakfast is ideally located for Ottawa historical attractions, the Byward market and restaurants, walking distance to most of Ottawa gay bars and Ottawa gay clubs. Janice your host at this Ottawa bed and breakfast is charming, straight, friendly and very helpful in assisting you on Ottawa’s attractions. Most of the guests are from the straight community and Janice equally welcomes gay and lesbian guests. The spacious living room is very comfortable and is a delight to sit back and read the daily newspapers. Wireless Internet has great reception and there is off street parking.
Amenities: Very Good, all rooms with private bathroom though ours had little space between the washbasin and toilet, DVD player with small colour TV. Room darkening good.
Hospitality: Excellent and Janice is a knowledgeable host, variable breakfasts are a delight and the table setting makes easy conversation with the other guests.
Overall Comfort: Very good and the King bed had a pillow top mattress making it more comfortable for us plus the fine quality linens.
Value for Money: Over a $100 per night it is still excellent for value and location.
Montreal
Le St-Christophe Guest House
1597 St-Christophe, Montreal, Quebec, Canada, H21 3W7 Tel. (514) 527 7836
Le St-Christophe Guest House location for Montreal gay bars and Montreal gay clubs is great as it is within a brief walking distance to them. Regie is your main host and the weekends he is joined by his partner Shan. They bought this Montreal gay B&B about eighteen months ago and are continually improving on the b&b with better AC units, general upkeep and double glazing. We had the room with the queen bed and additional pull down bed. The private bathroom toilet was very cramp to sit down on, room darkening is good. The 19” TV had your basic cable though most of the stations were in French but no DVD player. Another firm bed so check out Ashe’s men’s day spa, he gives a wonderful professional de-stressing massage. www.oneinzen.com
Amenities: Good, the bathroom lacked shampoo and individual soap bars. No DVD player but a VCR with a library of adult movies. In the summer they have a deck where guests can sunbathe in the nude. Some of the rooms have shared bathrooms.
Hospitality: Very Good even Regis English is improving all the time and is a delight to talk to. Breakfasts are good and variable with plenty of fresh fruit.
Overall Comfort: Good, our room was quite large with a two-seat couch and we had plenty of bath towels.
Value for Money: Good as the location was excellent for Montreal gay village, we had the most expensive room and I am sure when they remodel the bathroom, hopefully reducing the voices from the dining room, it will be at its full potential. Just remember the additional taxes are around 18%.
Quebec City
Hippocampe – Sauna – Hotel – Spa
31, rue McMahnon, Vieux-Quebec, Quebec, Canada, Tel (418) 692 1521
The Hippocampe is Quebec City gay sauna with accommodations attached to it. The guest rooms are either shared or private bathrooms and breakfast is not provided. This Quebec gay accommodation has reasonable size rooms with basic furnishing and ensuite bathrooms are a comfortable size. The spa facilities are very good and kept in good order. You have to realize this is primarily a bathhouse, we were not bothered by any noise but keep you door closed if you want privacy. Hippocampe is ideally located to explore historic Quebec City and is very convenient for Quebec City gay bars and Quebec gay clubs. For a great Quebec City gay bar and night club check out www.ledrague.com
Amenities: For this Quebec gay spa they are very good with steam room, hot tub, dry sauna, TV room and tanning booth. The hotel rooms were limited with basic cable TV with free porno channel, fridge, uncomfortable wicker chairs and extremely hard queen bed that we found to be very uncomfortable. No wireless internet but a public guest computer with free internet was available
Hospitality: Good as the receptionist spoke English and was helpful in directing where Quebec City gay bars were located.
Overall Comfort: Poor for the bed comfort and chairs otherwise good.
Value for money: For the location very good, spa and sauna that was included in your room price excellent, room ok.

Mexico:
Jalisco
Puerto Vallarta
Villa David
Calle Galeana #348, Puerto Vallarta, Jalisco 48300, Mexico. Tel [52] 322-223-0315
Located in the old town up a steep street not far where Elizabeth Taylor had her villa. With marvelous views of the bay with the cathedral in the foreground this gay Puerto Vallarta bed and breakfast is walking distance to the gay bars, clubs and restaurants. Puerto Vallarta gay beach is a little further altogether 25 min walk. We really enjoyed our stay at Villa David as it had the amenities we have come to expect as well as the swimming pool and hot tub. Breakfasts are great and we were well look after by our knowledgeable hosts. We hope to come back again soon to escape the cold Canadian winters in this gay men only Puerto Vallarta bed and breakfast.
Guadalajara La Perla B&B
Prado 128, Guadalajara, Jalisco, 44160, Mexico. Tel [52] 333-826-6961
We have been recommended La Perla B&B and hope to visit the B&B soon. All are welcome.
Colima
Peninsula de Juluipan
Los Suenos Del Mar
Calle Almendros 98, Peninsular de Juluipan, Colima, CP 28860, Mexico
The house is located on a cliff overlooking the bay and about 20 min drive to Manzanillo. The rooms are great with many amenities and breakfasts on the veranda with a marvelous view. Your hosts are helpful and knowledgeable and provide great breakfasts. You will need some form of transport and hiring a car in Mexico is expensive an alternative is to come to arrangement to hire a personal taxi to be on hand.
I am not much of a beach person and enjoy exploring urban communities and after two weeks on a coastal resort we are happy to be back at home. What we do suggest is if you do not feel like driving is to use the Mexican inter city express busses as they are comfortable and reasonably priced. It is great to relax for a few days in Puerto Vallarta and then to take the bus to Guadalajara and explore the museums, art galleries and markets of this city. If time permits visit Manzanillo and relax at the Los Suenos Del Mar.
Australia:
New South Wales
Sydney
Sydney Park Lodge Hotel
747 South Dowling Street, Moore Park, Sydney, N.S.W. 2016 Australia. Tel [61] 2 9318 2393
Reasonable price gay Sydney hotel as it is custom in Australia they will charge for the extras. Oxford Street is within walking distance and public transport to the harbour is good. The staff are very helpful with suggestions for tours and do try the “Sydney Diva Tour” which is great fun. Rooms are comfortable and the self serve breakfast is ok.
Western Australia
Perth
Pension of Perth
3 Throssell Street, Perth, WA 6000. Tel [61] 8-9228-9049
We like Pension of Perth for its reasonable comfort, location and breakfast. It use to be gay owned but a straight couple bought it and now owners Steve and Hoon still welcome gay and lesbian guests. They were very good and helpful hosts. The house is opposite a beautiful park and is about a 20 min walk to Perth gay bars, the downtown is another 10 min walk.
One of our greatest travel experiences was to ride the Indian Pacific train on a gold kangaroo class ticket. Leaving Sydney and taking three days to cross Australia to Perth, traveling through mountains, plains and deserts. It is worth while the money.
United Kingdom:
England
London
Lincoln House Hotel
33 Gloucester Place, Marble Arch, London W1U 8HY Tel [44] (0) 207-486-7630
We have been recommended this London gay friendly hotel, close to Marble Arch which is a few minutes walk from some of the gay bars and clubs around Oxford St. and Soho. Let us know
Blackpool
The Seacroft Hotel
27 Lord Street, Blackpool, Lancashire FY1 2BD Tel [44] (0) 1253 628304
Gay Blackpool is located on the North Shore of this famous Victorian seaside resort on the Northwest coast of England. More and more Blackpool gay bars and clubs are opening and it is my belief will become the UK’s gay resort. The Seacroft is located within a few minutes walk of Blackpool gay clubs and bars including the Funny Girls theatre. Our room was a decent size with a king bed and ensuite shower bathroom, the TV for the UK a larger size. Breakfast at the moment are continental and a small hotel bar is being built. Parking is not available. Our two hosts were great and very helpful and we would stay with them again.
For those of you that are used to having in our own homes 16 to 18 inch deep mattress with a cushioning pillow top might have difficulty adjusting to basic and extremely firm hotel mattress built for durability rather than comfort. If you are in the UK for some time, I suggest buying a roll up pillow top foam you can place on top of the B&B or hotel mattress. These may be purchased in UK department or bedding stores. |
